#219-"MOM, NOW WHO'S THE STUPID ONE?"

When my children and I first moved to a small town in Missouri (the end of the world, according to my children) we decided to have all of the animals around us that we could not have while living in the city.  First we set up a coop and filled it with chickens.  Next we decided to have ducks.  I swear, they are the nastiness, dirtiest, and stupidest animals I have ever had the misfortune to own.

We set up a kiddy pool (you know the kind with the hard metal shell and a plastic liner) and we put them up in the chicken coop each night.  We assumed that, eventually, they would put themselves away at night like the chickens.  NOPE!  They plopped themselves down right where they stood when it got dark.  This became a real pain (for us and the ducks) because my kids and I would have to run around in the dark looking for them.  Often we found them the hard way (when they squawked after being stepped on).  They never learned.  I found this to be incredibly stupid since there were all kinds of animals around that would enjoy a nice duck feast.

We did have fun with those ducks (Daffy and Doris).  We even purchased fish to turn loose in the pool so we could watch them dive for them.  However, one afternoon the sky clouded over quickly, as it often does in Missouri, and, without a doubt, we were about to have a severe storm.

The INTELLIGENT chickens had already noticed the impending danger and had quickly headed for their coop.  But, not the ducks, no, THEY WERE STILL SWIMMING IN THEIR POOL!  My son, Gene, and I tried to get them out of the pool, but they would just gaily swim out of our reach as if it was some kind of game.
The thunder and lightening began to make an ominous approach.  Each time the lightening would flash those STUPID ducks would dive under the water to escape (DUH!).  I began yelling, "YOU STUPID  DUCKS GET OUT OF THE WATER BEFORE YOU GET FRIED!"  At this, I stepped into the pool, and scooped the ducks up in my arms.

That is when my 12 year old son put his hands on his hips and calmly said, over the rumble in the sky,  "MOM, NOW WHO'S THE STUPID ONE?"

  1. Regular ducks are stupid & nasty. Fishducky's, on the other hand, are trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind,
obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean & reverent--or is that Boy Scouts? I'm always getting the two confused.

  2. This post reminds me about how much work it is to own animals! I'm not a big outdoor kinda girl and the mess with the chickens prove to be a disaster! Although the ducks sound adorable!!!

  3. Only you, Karen...only you :)

A lovely story that had me on the edge of my seat. So glad you braved the lightning to rescue your dim witted ducks :) Even more glad to know the lightning didn't stike whilst you were performing your courageously dim witted rescue ;)

It's SO GOOD to have you back with us, Karen. I hope life is treating you very, very kindly!

  4. Great Story KT - towards the end there, I thought oh, oh - she's in the pool with the ducks in this terrible storm - you saved Daffy n Doris - of course you did. You are a hero of sorts, maybe.........at least you didn't get zapped by lightening girl. Cute story - glad to hear from you and thanks Karen for the note you sent - it meant a lot to me. Have a great day kiddo.

  7. We had 4 ducks once. My 4 cousins, who lived in the city, all received a tiny duckling for Easter (bad idea, who thought that one up anyway). Well, as they grew, no one had time or place for them. So ..... since we lived in the country, we took them. Fast forward one year...
32 ducks! One of those dirty birds was a male. They would quack and walk around the house every morning about 5 or 5:30. My mother said "that's it" and then we were knee deep in feathers, plucking and plucking. But we had some nice duck dinners for a long time!

  9. That's hilarious. I'm so glad the story had a happy ending, well, except for the part when your son called you "stupid". heehee. We had some neighbors in town, who had two ducks for pets. We didn't know their names at the time, so we called them "The Duck People", what else? And then we called them, Daisy and Donald. But, then "Donald" moved out and "Daffy" moved in. She got custody of the ducks. As to the story about the ssssnake? (yuck, I'm getting the shivers just thinking about it!) I'm going to say, the one about pets leaving the strangest gifts. Be sure to let me know in advance, because I might have to think twice about reading that one. Snakes give me the heebee jeebees, and right now I want to have my feet high off the floor!! Oh, and the diet I did was the Hcg diet. I lost 40 pounds. That stuff works!

  13. Loved this story. Do know what you mean by how dirty and stupid these birds are. We have chickens and in addition to the eggs they are great composters and funny to watch. Have had wild ducks try to use our rockscaped salt water pool as their private pond and breeding area for the last two years. After dealing with the mess and having to set up an escape area for the ducklings to be able to get out of the pool with it's high sides, this year we are seriously on alert to keep the critters out. Have had them circling the last few days checking out "the pond". If they do manage to return it's duck eggs and roast duck this year! : )
